Big Second Period Carries Xpress Past Cherokee, 6-3

A four-goal outburst in the second period gave the Southern Tier Xpress a 6-3 win over the Toledo Cherokee in the North American Tier III Hockey League East Division at Northwest Arena on Friday night.

Trailing 1-0 after the first period, the Xpress got two goals from Luke MacLeod and single goals from Mickenzie Restle and Stuart Pearson for a 4-2 edge after the second period.

Restle scored his eighth of the season from Ty Rickabaugh; Pearson scored his sixth from John Ogeka and Nick Wilcox; MacLeod scored his first from Nic Allen and Tony Weinrich; and MacLeod tallied his second from Tommy Muecke in the second period.

Michael Keller scored his fourth goal for the Xpress in the third period from Michael Lamison before Pearson scored his second of the night and seventh of the season unassisted.

Blake Mullins scored his second goal of the year from Tristin Snyder and Michael Papaioannou to get the Cherokee started in the opening period.

The Xpress outshot the Cherokee, 45-38. Ryan Pascarella made 35 saves for the Xpress while Alan Brouillette and Ricardo Gonzalez combined for 39 saves in vain.

The same two teams play tonight at Northwest Arena with a 7 p.m. puck drop.
