Despite Plenty Of Chances, Xpress Fall, 2-1

Southern Tier threw 56 shots at the Toledo net, but was only able to muster one goal in a 2-1 North American Tier III Hockey League East Division loss Saturday night at Northwest Arena.

The Cherokee put 20 shots on the Xpress goal in the first period and left the opening 20 minutes with a 2-0 lead.

Brock Grandbois opened the scoring 3:46 in with his 12th of the season from Ricky Kwapich and Nolan Stanley on the power play.

Over seven minutes later, Kwapich made it 2-0 with a goal from Tristin Snyder.

The Xpress outshot Toledo, 47-13 over the final 40 minutes, but were only able to solve goaltender Roman Malkov one time as he turned aside 55 shots.

Harrison Vangellow made 31 saves in net for Southern Tier, which stopped four of five Cherokee power plays, but had just one of its own.

The Xpress return to action at 3 p.m. today against the Roc City Royals at Northwest Arena.
