Lansing Jumps Out To Early Lead, Downs Xpress, 8-3

The Southern Xpress didn’t have much success in their first trip to the Lansing Wolves in the North American Tier 3 Hockey League on Friday night.

Lansing took a 2-0 lead in the first three minutes and never looked back en route to an 8-3 victory at the Summit Sports & Ice Complex.

Jacob Deratany scored his fourth goal of the season from Mac Diver at 2:03 and Michael Schramm also got his fourth goal unassisted just 14 seconds later.

The Xpress cut the deficit to 2-1 as Brian Grant got his first goal of the season from Stuart Pearson and Joe Gerace at 14:46.

However, Lansing restored the lead to two goals as Brendan Smith tallied his eighth of the year from Cameron Zucker to make it 3-1.

The Wolves stretched the lead to 5-1 in the second period as Brian Smith scored on a power play from Garrett Daum and Bauer Cooper, and Brandon Ashley scored back-to-back goals to make it 6-1 for the Wolves.

Ashley scored from Garrett Daum and Bauer Cooper and then he scored from Jacob Redman. Chris Seelye scored from Noah Dimmer at 15:19 to increase the score to 7-1.

Nic Allen scored for the Xpress from Mikenzie Restle on a power play to bring the score to 7-2.

Deratany increased the lead to 8-2 on a pass from Daum in the third period.

Pearson closed out the scoring for the Xpress in the third period.

Will Ianatovich was the winning goalie with 14 saves while Brandon Heacock made 24 saves and Rob Pascarella made four saves for the Xpress.

The Xpress (6-11) hope to bounce back against the Wolves (8-11-1) at 7:30 p.m. today. They’ll conclude their weekend series at 2 p.m. Sunday.
