Second Period Dooms Xpress In Pittsburgh

The second period was a problem again as the Southern Tier Xpress lost to the Pittsburgh Vengeance, 7-4, at the Alpha Ice Complex on Saturday evening.

The teams entered the second period tied 1-all, and the Xpress actually took a 3-2 lead at the 7:04 mark when Matthew Crosby netted his third goal of the season from Cameron Trejchel and Hunter Kepple, but the Vengeance answered with four straight goals to close out the period.

At 12:32, Brian Dee scored his eighth from Cam Williams and James Unger on the power play before Vincent Casale scored his fifth from Camron Smith and Nolan Puhala at the 15:17 mark. Just over a minute later, Dominick Glavach scored his 10th of the year from Dillon Joyce and Dee before Joyce scored his third from Glavach and Thomas Polster at the 17:46 mark.

Crosby answered for the Xpress just 16 seconds into the third period to make it 6-4, but Pittsburgh moved its lead back to three at the 5:49 mark when Casale scored his sixth from Kenny White and Gavin Cummings.

Kepple opened the scoring for Southern Tier from Crosby and Trejchel, but the Vengeance answered when Glavach scored from Justin Shepherd and Polster.

Pittsburgh took a short-lived 2-1 lead at 6:14 of the second period when Dee scored from Glavach and White, but Jacob Zwieg answered just 39 seconds later when he scored his first goal of the season from Tristan Mock.

Jacob Zab recorded the win for Pittsburgh, allowing just one goal on 16 shots after relieving Jacob Hough in the second period. Harrison Vangellow took the loss for the Xpress, stopping 37 of 44 shots.

The teams split eight power plays, with the Vengeance tallying the only man-advantage goal.
