Southern Tier stifles Pittsburgh’s comeback, gains 4-3 victory

The Southern Tier Xpress came close to giving away a three-goal lead to the Pittsburgh Vengeance, but did just enough to escape with a 4-3 victory.

Southern Tier led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Xpress\’ Mark Sunde scored on the power play at 17:01 in the first period to put Southern Tier up 3-0.

The Xpress were paced by Luke Grossman, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Grossman scored short handed 14:23 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Southern Tier. An interference call on Niko Greco put Southern Tier on the penalty kill. Justin Andriaccio assisted on the tally.

The Xpress were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 56 penalty minutes.

Southern Tier also got points from Andriaccio, who also registered one goal and one assist and Sunde, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Southern Tier also got a goal from Tim Weisgerber as well. In addition, Southern Tier received assists from Luke Sunde, who had two and Curtis Carlson and Tobias Gabrielsen, who each chipped in one.

Team could not crack Southern Tier\’s penalty kill and was held to two power play goals while having 11 opportunities to play with the man advantage.

Pittsburgh was helped by Nils Markgren, who had one goal. Markgren scored 6:39 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Southern Tier. Bryan Hovanec picked up the assist. Pittsburgh additionally got points from Hovanec, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Parker Henry also scored for Pittsburgh. More assists for Pittsburgh came via Tyler Speis and Yevgeniy Gladkiy, who contributed one each.

Cody Gibson recorded 21 saves for the Xpress. Southern Tier registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Brian Baker made 24 saves for the Vengeance on 28 shots. Pittsburgh incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
