After an even first 40 minutes of play, it was two third-period goals from the Willmar WarHawks that doomed the Southern Tier Xpress in an eventual 2-0 loss Friday at the North American Tier III Hockey League Showcase.
Brandon Shea found the back of the net for the first time of the season for Willmar at the 12:32 mark of the final stanza on an assist from teammate Alec Skar.
Less than four minutes later, Kane Toriumi scored his ninth goal of the 2016-17 campaign to seal the victory for the WarHawks. Toriumi’s tally was assisted by Riley Tigrett and Leonardo Ewald.
Southern Tier (9-12-2) outshot Willmar, 24-21, but couldn’t capitalize.
Harrison Vangellow turned away 19 of 21 shots between the pipes for the Xpress while Willmar goalie Alexander Cathcart stopped all 24 shots he saw in the shutout win.
The Xpress will look to bounce back today against the Chicago Bulldogs as the NA3HL Showcase rolls on.
