The Southern Tier Xpress failed to move above .500 for the season Friday night, losing to the Metro Jets, 8-2, in North American Tier III Hockey League East Division action at Northwest Arena.
The only goal in the first period was scored by Metro’s Kyle Gierman with assists from Jeremy Schwartz and Trevor Momot at 12:04.
In the second period, Metro went wild with six goals for an insurmountable 7-0 lead. Joey Bruce started the barrage off at 7:14 from Rhett Limback and Schwartz followed by Connor Inger at 7:59 from Gierman and Momot. Mathieu LaForest was next on the scoring list at 9:11 from Jhuwon Davis and Anthony Cinato followed by another Inger goal at 14:51 from George Hansen. The score increased to 6-0 as Schwartz tallied from Limback and Bruce at 16:35 before LaForest scored his second from Davis and Cinato at 17:37.
Stuart Pearson got the Xpress on the board in the third period with his 10th goal of the year from Calvin Tonzi and Michael Keller to break the shutout bid of goaltender Brian Tallieu. The Xpress added a second goal as Nic Allen scored on the power play from Keller and Mickenzie Restle at 2:41.
Metro closed out the scoring at 16:04 when Bruce scored his second goal from John Mears and Brodie Thornton at 16:04.
Tallieu made 29 saves in getting the win while Ryan Pascarella made 53 saves on 61 shots for the Xpress.
The Xpress and Jets return to action today at 5 p.m. at Northwest Arena.
