Xpress Rally, But Ultimately Fall To West Michigan

A goal by Collin Rewerts at 8:03 of the third period proved to be the difference for West Michigan in a 5-4 win over the Southern Tier Xpress in the NA3HL Saturday at the Northwest Arena.

It was a tough game to lose because the Xpress had battled back for a 4-1 deficit to tie only to see West Michigan get the winner on an unassisted goal by Rewerts.

The loss was the third straight by the Xpress, now 3-5-1, while the win lifted West Michigan to 10-6 as it completed a two-game sweep of the Xpress this weekend.

Both teams scored a goal in the first period with West Michigan getting on the scoreboard first on a tally by Dakota Ulmer from Danill Remido and Jason Bloomfield at 5:51.

The Express knotted the game at 1-1 on Joshua Malin’s tally from Jacob St. Andre and Cameron Pries at 9:45.

Jacob Redman made it 2-1 for West Michigan on an assist from Bloomfield at 7:15 of the second period. Nathan Sudek scored unassisted to make it 3-1 at 11:40 and, just 28 seconds later, Rewerts scored his first goal unassisted to put West Michigan on top, 4-1.

The Xpress got back into the game with two goals in the later part of the period. Ty Rickabaugh scored from Arttu Rajamaki on a power play at 16:07 and St. Andre tallied from Luke Grossman and Pries at 17:05 to trim the deficit to 4-3.

In the first minute of the third stanza, Grossman tied at 4-4 with an unassisted goal at 41 seconds ,but then Rewerts got the winner and the Xpress couldn’t respond the rest of the way.
