Twenty-four hours removed from arguably the Southern Tier Xpress’ biggest win of the North American Tier III Hockey League season, Ricky Kwapich and the Toledo Cherokee played the role of spoiler Saturday night at Northwest Arena.
Kwapich recorded a hat trick and the Cherokee scored four third-period goals en route to a 6-4 win, further distancing Toledo from Southern Tier in the playoff standings.
EJ Gilbert, Giovanni Taormina and Tristin Snyder supplied the other goals in the big win for the Cherokee while goalie Roman Malkov turned away 19 shots in net.
Gilbert, Snyder and Adam Felser all had two assists as well for Toledo (14-14-1).
For Southern Tier (12-13-2), Cameron Pries and Nicholas Wilcox found the back of the net in the second period. Joseph Gerace and Hunter Kepple also scored in the third period in defeat.
Joshua Malin, Eriq Schau, Gerace, Cameron Trejchel, Pries and Luke Grossman all dished out assists for Southern Tier. Goalie Ryan Pascarella made 23 saves.
Southern Tier will look to bounce back Friday on the road against the Wooster Oilers.
